Beyond the label

It’s our mission to bring you interesting wines from the world’s under-the-radar wine regions. And we’re thrilled to introduce 14/27 Assyrtiko—a classic white wine from Greece that’s carefully handcrafted and absolutely delicious. If you’re a fan of Sauvignon Blanc or Albariño, then you’ll really want to try Assyrtiko.

“Assyrtiko is an excellent wine to pair with food, aided by its pronounced savory profile, stony minerality and citrus freshness. This unique Greek grape is rising from relative obscurity, with an insider cult following, to achieve a resonant new voice in the wine world,” says Decanter.

And who better to bring you a taste than Christos Vavatsis at Symposium Cellars—which is relatively new on the scene, but already attracting the attention of critics and wine lovers across the globe.

For this thrilling white, Christos sourced Assyriko grapes from vineyards in Nemea, on the northeastern region of the Peloponnese peninsula. The vineyards are planted at up to 2,600 feet above sea level, giving the fruit plenty of sunshine to ripen during the day, and cooler nights to maintain Assyrtiko's trademark acidity and freshness. The unique red clay soils are rich in minerals, which also adds to the complexity of the wine that reaches your glass. After the grapes were hand harvested, Christos fermented their juice in stainless steel to allow the pure character of the Assyrtiko grape to shine.

14/27 Assyrtiko has aromas of fresh citrus, white peach and green pear, plus a subtle hint of Greek herbs. On the palate, look forward to ripe lemon and peach flavors, along with a delicate minerality and lively streak of acidity through the finish. It’s a classic expression of this native Greek grape, and its name is equally authentic. It’s called 14/27 after the Ancient Greek tradition of symposiums (which translates to “drinking together”). Held after large feasts, these events brought together 14 to 27 people to debate, drink and dance.

And here’s another unique story to share with guests as you pour: Nemea is not only famous for its excellent wines but also for its connection to one of the most famous Greek demi-gods. According to mythology, Nemea is where Hercules is said to have killed the Nemean lion as part of his 12 Labors.

Nemea remains something of an insider’s secret, so the wines still offer incredible value. Secure your share of this exciting Greek red today then enjoy at your own symposium (with as many friends as you’d like!).
