Beyond the label

Paolo Masi is one of Tuscany’s most talented winemakers and the third generation of his family to craft wine in Chianti. Since graduating top of his class at Florence’s wine university, he “has made an excellent impression with the estate wines of his family property,” writes top critic Robert Parker.

Excellent impression, indeed. Italy’s top wine guide, Gambero Rosso has famously praised Paolo’s wines for their “irreproachably clean fruit and abundant personality.” And the maestro has done it again with this brand-new Super Tuscan.

Named Contrappasso (‘opposite’), it marries Sangiovese, Tuscany’s great red, with international superstar Syrah. These varieties couldn’t be more different—Sangiovese offers vibrant, tart red-fruit flavors, while Syrah brings lusher, richer berry notes. But when blended together, as Paolo skillfully proves, they produce a truly remarkable wine.

Last vintage, Contrappasso was rated 93 points by leading Italian critic Luca Maroni, 90 points by James Suckling and won a Gilbert & Gaillard gold medal. Here’s what the judges had to say:

“Endearing nose of red and black fruits...velvety and powerful. Made in fine Tuscan tradition. Pairs with grilled red meats.”

And the new 2021 release is every bit as impressive. Order your share and be among the first to taste it.
