Flavor Profile
The Thief of Bagdad is a classic 1940 film that follows Ahmad, the young Sultan of Bagdad, as he attempts to reclaim his throne and rescue the princess he loves from the evil Grand Vizier. While there’s no genie in the bottle here, this elegant Pinot Noir makes a captivating tribute to the beloved historical fantasy film. Pop it open to reveal a lovely ruby color, which gives way to ripe, red-fruit flavors and a silky texture that’s smoother than any magic carpet ride.
Nicknamed “The Heartbreak Grape,” Pinot Noir is infamously difficult to grow. The same thin skin that’s responsible for giving the wines their trademark pale color also renders the grape susceptible to vineyard maladies and damage from harsh weather. But it’s found a welcome home in California’s Clarksburg region. Bordered by the cooling waterways of the Sacramento River Delta, Clarksburg is optimum wine territory. The growing season here is nice and long, thanks to the moderating effect of the surrounding water.
Smooth and silky, this delicious Pinot offers with bright cherry and raspberry notes, with a hint of toasted almond on the finish. Pinot Noir is ultra-versatile and delights with a variety of foods, from roasted turkey and pork to ‘meaty’ fishes like tuna, salmon and swordfish. Vegetarian? Enjoy it with mushroom risotto, goat cheese and beet salad or garlic-roasted heirloom carrots over quinoa.
Classic Movie Pairing: The Thief of Bagdad (1924)
A wondrous silent fantasy, this adaptation of the classic Arabian Nights may have been the high water mark for Douglas Fairbanks, arguably the biggest star in the world at that time. Noted for his charisma, stuntwork and ample comedic talent, Fairbanks won over audiences yet again as a young thief who falls in love with a princess. One of the most expensive films of the 1920s, it features incredible sets by designer William Cameron Menzies and includes an early appearance by actress Anna May Wong. Enjoy it with this equally exciting Pinot Noir.
