Discover the thrilling new wave of sparkling wine...
Meet Barbara Laithwaite, a pioneer of English sparkling wine. In 2003, she made a bold move that put Wyfold Vineyard on the map as one of England’s most celebrated producers. Today, her wines are sought after by critics and wine lovers alike.
Her Wyfold Brut & Rosé bubblies hail from southern England, a region now renowned for its superb Champagne rivals. While many big names have since established roots here, Barbara was one of the first, planting her vineyard in Oxfordshire by hand with the help of family and friends. The vineyard’s south-facing slopes, gravel terraces and chalky subsoil (just like Champagne), combined with the cool climate, create the perfect conditions for crafting elegant, refined sparkling wines.
Barbara is hands-on at every stage—pruning vines, hand-labeling bottles, cooking hot meals for the harvest team. Her son, award-winning winemaker Henry Laithwaite, also lends his expertise, and together they’ve won medals, high scores, trophies—and even beat top Champagnes in prestigious competitions.
Wyfold wines are handmade and rare. With only 2.2 hectares of vines, the vineyard produces just 1,500 cases a year—a stark contrast to Champagne giants like Veuve Clicquot, which produces over 1.5 million cases annually. Every bottle of Wyfold is a testament to Barbara’s unwavering passion and commitment to excellence, proving that English sparkling wine is well-deserving of all the fanfare.

“There are many big players in the UK and I like to think we punch well above our weight. Henry and I just concentrate on making the very best wine and letting it speak for itself.”
what is english sparkling WINE?
Great question!
“English Quality Sparkling Wines” are similar to Champagne in their style, grape selection and winemaking. They must be crafted from the official, approved grapes for Champagne (which include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier). The wines must also be made in the same méthode traditionnelle, where the bubbles are born inside the bottle (not in a tank).
Why England? Why now?
Southern England has the perfect cooler climate to grow sparkling wine grapes—akin to Champagne’s ideal conditions 20 years ago. It also has the same chalky subsoil as Champagne, ideal for growing sparkling wine grapes.
Well-deserved kudos...
Wyfold Vineyard’s wines regularly win big awards and high scores, and are served at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. and Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe. On a colorful note: the Pantone Institute chose Wyfold as the official color reference for English Sparkling. It’s even available as a paint color in the UK
