Flavor Profile

Beyond the label

Chatêau Pontet-Canet has a rich history dating to the 17th century, and it was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855. However, in recent years, under the leadership of Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme (who retired in 2020), its reputation has far surpassed this classification, and t is widely considered a “Super Second” as well as one of the most collectible red wines on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.

In 2010, Pontet-Canet became the Left Bank’s first classified growth to earn a 100% organic and biodynamic certification, which was considered a true feat given the region’s cold and damp maritime climate. The château has continued to innovate over the years, for example using an array of aging vessels beyond the standard French oak barrique. For vinification, egg-shaped wooden vats and sunken qvevri-style clay vats are employed, and part of the wine is aged in clay amphorae.

The vineyard is planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and the vines average 40 years of age. This mature 2014 is just entering its drinking window, and is highly rated by the world’s top critics (see below).

“This is a finely structured wine with dark tannins and intense black fruits. The estate, with its biodynamically grown fruit, has given an impressively pure wine, packed with tight serious tannins and a fine structure of black-plum skins and intense acidity. It is direct, firm and with a huge potential over many years. *Cellar Selection*. ” – Wine Enthusiast
