Flavor Profile

Beyond the label

You might know Hervé Fabre (below, with wife Diane) as the talented winemaker behind many of our best-selling Argentine wines. But did you know that—like his signature grape variety, Malbec—he’s originally from France? For Les Pépites, Hervé has returned to their shared homeland to prove that Malbec can make truly lovely wines here.

Traditionally, Malbec produced the somewhat harsh “black wines” of France’s Cahors region. But today, winemakers like Hervé are making red wines in a more elegant, accessible style. Hervé has also added a healthy dash of Syrah, another red grape variety native to France, to Les Pépites for a little extra richness.

As you’d expect from Hervé, whose many awards include the International Wine Challenge’s Red Winemaker of the Year and a Winemaking Legend title from critic (and Master of Wine) Tim Atkin, Les Pépites is absolutely delicious. Critic James Suckling rated this 2023 release 90 points, noting its “Pleasant and charming nose of dark cherries, cassis…and violets. Medium-bodied with soft tannins. Juicy…with a laid back finish.” Brimming with expressive red berry, licorice and spice notes, it will be a fine choice for a dinner party.
