Flavor Profile
“There is no better time to check out Puglian wine than now. I can’t imagine a better source of distinctive, charismatic and easy-to-drink wines for under $25.”
– Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
And we can’t imagine a better place to start exploring than with Pillastro Primitivo. This Puglian red wine is a hit with all who taste it, boasting more than 60 honors in its award pedigree and tons of Favorite clicks from our customers—this vintage alone has clocked a 94-point score and a double-gold medal.
This wine’s popularity is hardly surprising when you consider the source. It hails from Cantine Due Palme, a winemaking cooperative with loads of awards to its name, including Gambero Rosso’s Cooperative Cellar of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. It was founded by three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci (below) in 1989. Nowadays, his daughter Melissa is President, while his grandson Francesco assists the new head winemaker, Vincenzo Campanella, in the cellar.
Primitivo, a cousin of California’s fruit-packed Zinfandel, is the godfather of southern Italian grapes. It’s dark, rich and persuasively charming—and the Cantinue Due Palme team excels at drawing out those qualities, insisting that all Pillastro’s grapes be harvested from very old (flavor-boosting) vines. Here’s Gilbert & Gaillard on what to expect: “Expressive aromas of red berry fruit…full-bodied, smooth and fairly dense on the palate, starting to roll out a complex mix of full, tasty flavors.”
GOOD TO KNOW: This wine qualifies for multiple case pricing (a case = 12 btls). The more cases you buy, the less you’ll pay per bottle—and the more you’ll save! Price updates in shopping cart.
