Wine FAQs

What Are White Blends?

white wine blend is a white wine produced from more than one grape variety. The most common white blends besides Champagne and other sparkling wines are Rhône blends using grapes including Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette, and Bordeaux blends using grapes including Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Sauvignon Gris. White wine blends can be made with any combination of white wine grape varieties, and the resulting wine can range in flavor from light and fruity to rich and full-bodied.

The most famous white wine blend is Champagne, exclusive to the Champagne region of northern France. Usually, Chardonnay grapes are blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which are both red grapes, but the blend remains white as only the juice of the grapes is used and not the skins. There are some other combinations of Champagne, such as Franciacorta, which often combines Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco.

White wine blends are brimming with complexity and can offer more flavor than single-variety whites, producing rich, creamy wines that can be matured for years.

What Grapes Are in White Wine Blends?

White wine blends can be produced using any combination of grapes. The grapes are typically crushed and fermented before blending occurs. Many of the world’s most-loved white wine blends contain two or more grape varieties, with some of the most popular blending grapes including:

  • Sémillon
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Muscadelle
  • Verdejo
  • Garnacha Blanca
  • Chardonnay
  • Sauvignon Gris
  • Roussanne
  • Marsanne
  • Clairette
  • Ugni Blanc
  • Colombard
  • Trebbiano
  • Viognier

What Do White Wine Blends Taste Like?

With such a diverse range of grape combinations possible, the tasting notes in each white wine blend will naturally vary. There are many different types of white wine blends, each with its own unique flavor profile.

Some white wine blends are dry and crisp, with high acidity and notes of sweet citrus fruit. Others are rich, creamy, and age-worthy wines that develop candied fruit and honey flavors as they age.

What Foods To Pair With White Wine Blends?

When choosing a white wine blend to pair with food, it is essential to consider the flavors of the wine and the food.

White blends vary in body, acidity, and flavor but are usually better matched to lighter dishes like seafood, creamy cheeses, and salads. More succulent white blends pair perfectly with sweet fruits and creamy desserts.

What Are Popular White Wine Blends?

Bordeaux Blanc

Bordeaux Blanc is a French blend famous for its aging ability and pristine quality. The wine is traditionally a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and Sémillon, containing flavors of nectarine and sweet apple. Mature White Bordeaux offers a richer texture with baked fruits, chamomile, and honey notes. Bordeaux Blanc is best paired with a garlic-based, creamy risotto. Rhône Blends

Rhône white blends combine two traditional Rhône grape varieties, including, but not only, Marsanne, Viognier, Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Roussanne. The primary flavors of a Rhône white blend include apricot, orange zest, and Meyer lemon. Rhône blends are deliciously matched with fish and poultry dishes, especially accompanied by fruit-led sauces to complement the fruitiness of the wine.

White Rioja

White Rioja is a renowned Spanish blend made with a minimum 51% of Viura, alongside Verdejo, Garnacha Blanca, or other white grapes. It’s usually aged in oak barrels and offers delightful citrus and dried fruit flavors. Try pairing white Rioja with grilled fish or fresh shrimp and Spanish-style salads.

Sauternes

Sauternes is a style of white Bordeaux wine created from the same blend of Sémillon, Muscadelle, and/or Sauvignon Blanc. Due to its luxurious, sweet flavors, Sauternes pairs well with fresh dessert dishes, such as strawberries and cream or Panna Cotta.

Why Blend White Wines?

Unlike single-variety whites, white wine blends offer fantastic aging potential and allow winemakers to produce consistently flavorful white wines.

What Temperature Should White Wine Blends Be Served?

Like with single-variety whites, white wine blends should be served chilled between 44-50° F. It’s best to take a bottle out of the refrigerator and leave it for around half an hour before serving. As with all white wine, white wine blends the look and taste best when sipped from a traditional wine glass.

Where Are White Wine Blends Made?

In addition to the styles described above, some of the best white wine blends are produced in France’s Southern Rhône region. However, Australia, South America, and California also craft high-quality white wine blends.
